Fungi eat animal and vegetable waste. They make the world sustainable because they recycle these wastes into forms that other organisms can use. Growing edible mushrooms adds a sustainability factor because it makes human food out of a process that largely produces no food directly. Yes, there are wild edible mushrooms, but only a small fraction of them are ever eaten by people.
