Klamath Falls Non-Profit Launches Basin's First Local Document Destruction and Recycling Service

September 18, 2009: REACH, Inc., a Klamath Falls non-profit organization, announces a set of services to provide secure document destruction and paper recycling.

Program Director Sharna Igou summarizes: "This will be the most cost effective, convenient, and secure document shredding and paper recycling service available in the Klamath basin."

The new enterprise - a subsidiary of REACH, Inc., - will operate under the name of REACH SecureShred Recycling. Unlike other entities which are headquartered outside the basin and use mobile units, REACH SecureShred Recycling offers a locally based point of operation. This provides Klamath Falls residences, small and large businesses, and enterprise level organizations a drop off point for secure shredding and standard paper recycling. Program Director Sharna Igou states: "As individuals, most of us have boxes of old tax returns, credit card receipts and sensitive documents lying around. We encourage people to bring these down and for a small fee we will take care of the shredding. For businesses we offer on-site pickups of confidential documents for shredding. We understand and operate in compliance with the regulations for the medical, financial and other industries. We also encourage everyone to give us their regular paper for recycling- office pack, newspapers, magazines, etc. There are no fees for this service."

A unique aspect of REACH's offering is its billing approach. Mobile truck shredding companies generally charge by the visit, whereas REACH SecureShred charges by the pound. This is a huge advantage because customers only pay for what is shred, thus helping reduce the customers overall costs. REACH Recycling also provides, at no charge to customers, bins and pick-up for collecting standard recycled paper.

REACH SecureShred Recycling has started this business for several reasons. First, to support employment and job creation in the Klamath basin; and second, because of concern for the environment. As one local Recycling Sourcing Manager recently stated: "Much of the office paper passing through traditional co-mingled recycling systems never gets recycle - it ends up in land fills. This happens because the paper is damaged by moisture and contamination or because to is simply too finely mixed for proper separation to occur".

Igou adds: "We hope to educate the community about the recycling process and encourage people to give us their paper and shredded documents so it can get to recyclers in a usable form."

REACH, Inc. is a non-profit organization that has been in continuous operations serving the Klamath basin since 1987. Its primary goal is providing full inclusion and dignity for people with disabilities through job training and employment.
